On Monday, the Jackson American Legion Post 130 baseball team beat Windom, which won the Big South Conference championship this spring. On Thursday, Post 130 did even better, topping Fairmont, the team that just won the Class AA state title, 11-9.
Jackson led 7-1 going to the bottom of the fifth, then Fairmont scored four runs to get back in it. Jackson answered with four runs in the seventh, then held on when Fairmont plated four of its own in the bottom half.
Cameron Scholten pitched the first six and one-third innings before Trace Michelson got the final two outs. Scholten struck out two batters in the win and relied on a stout defense.
Damien Phaly walked and Payton Handevidt tripled and both scored in the third inning. IN the fifth, Brennan Runge, Phaly, Logan Butzon, Handevidt and Scholten all scored. Michelson, Scholten, Ben Spaeth and Runge all scored in the seventh.
Runge finished with three hits and Michelson had two. Handevidt had a triple and walked twice. Handevidt, Scholten, Runge and Phaly all scored twice.
