GH: Eagles win in overtime

It took an extra 43 seconds but the Windom Area girls’ hockey team got its first win of the season with an 8-7 victory over Redwood Valley Tuesday night in Redwood Falls.
Brandy Kerkaert scored her second goal of the game just 43 seconds into overtime, giving the Eagles the win.
The Eagles are now 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in the Southwest Conference.
The Eagles looked to have the game in hand after the first and second periods, but RV scored five goals in the third period to erase a 7-2 deficit. WA led 4-1 after the first period.
Shelby Veenker gave the Eagles their first lead of the season just 1:42 into the game as she scored an unassisted goal.
RV answered but the Eagles got three goals in a span of 2:09 to take a 4-1 lead into the locker room.
Veenker scored the first of those three goals, with Josie Higley scoring moments later.
Veenker then completed her hat trick with a goal assisted by Brianna Grandprey.
Kerkaert scored a power play goal to open the second period, using an assist from Veenker.
After RV scored to cut Windom’s lead to 5-2, Higley notched her second goal of the game.
Veenker followed with her fourth goal of the contest, putting the Eagles up 7-2 after two periods.
The third period was all Redwood as the Cardinals scored five goals to tie the game, including three by Emmaly Spielmann, who had four goals for RV.
It only took one shot in the overtime period for the game to end as Kerkaert beat Cardinal goalie Sierra Wagner to end the game.
Eagle goalie Brooklyn Drahota faced 29 shots in the game, saving 22 of them. The Eagles fired 45 shots at Wagner.

The Eagles will be in Marshall tonight (Thursday) and at Mankato East Saturday before hosting New Ulm in the home opener next Monday.
