Speedway results - Sept. 26
By Tom Svoboda (September 30, 2009)
The ASA-sanctioned Jackson Speedway wrapped up its 2009 racing campaign Saturday night with the running of the annual Fall Classic. With sunny skies and comfortable fall temperatures, a good field of cars checked in for the last race of the season. Winning the night’s feature events were Gregg Bakker (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Jackson Speedway Touring Series U.S. Army sprints; Russell Wiese (Spencer, Iowa), NAPA of Windom 305 sprints; Trent Schroeder (Worthington), Performance Center stock cars; Mark Sathoff (Dolliver, Iowa), Bohl’s Small Engine and Marine Repair B modifieds; Dustin Larson (Rushmore), Loosbrock Digging Services hobby stocks; and Nate Coopman (Mankato), Yellowbook hornets.
Baker wins, repeats as JSTS points champion
In the 20-lap JSTS sprint car feature event, it was all Gregg Bakker. At the start of the race, the yellow flag came out when Bill Boles (Harris, Iowa) got tangled up with several other cars and ended up with a broken front end. On the complete restart, Bakker got the lead from his outside pole starting position. Brad Barickman (Richfield) grabbed the second spot, with Eric Lutz (Sioux Falls, S.D.) getting the third spot. On lap three, the caution came out again when Lutz got into the wall in turn four. The restart again saw Bakker maintain his lead with Barickman in second and now Nate Eakin (Milford, Iowa) in third. Two laps later, the caution came out again when Jody Rosenboom (Rock Rapids, Iowa) came to a stop going into turn one. The restart again saw Bakker keep the lead with Barickman in second and Eakin third. The leaders raced in that order through the halfway point in the race when third-place-running Eakin pulled his car into the pits. That allowed Wade Nygaard (Fargo, N.D.) to move into the third position. As the race went on, Bakker continued his lead, with Barickman in second and Nygaard third. When the checkered flew, it was Bakker taking the win, followed by Barickman, Nygaard, Jerry Richert Jr. (Forest Lake) and Jason Tostenson (Gaylord). The heat race wins went to Bakker, Lutz and Tostenson. Bakker also moved from third in the JSTS point standings going into the race to successfully defending his JSTS series title with the win.
Wiese wins 305 sprint feature
Two different drivers led in the 12-lap 305 sprint car feature race. At the start, Keith Carlberg (Webster City, Iowa) got the early lead and led for the first two laps. While working on lap three, Russell Wiese was able to make a move into the lead as the field worked through turns three and four. On the next lap, the red flag was thrown when Carlberg got upside down in turn four. He was OK but the car was heavily damaged. On the restart, Wiese was able to maintain the lead as Mike Blomstrom (Ft. Dodge, Iowa) ran in second and Jeff Edgington (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was third. When the checkered flag flew, it was Wiese picking up his second win in a row at Jackson Speedway. He was followed by Blomstrom, Edgington, Jake Nicosen (Ringsted, Iowa) and Steve Yarns (Jackson). The heat race was won by Carlberg.
Schroeder holds off field for stock car win
Two cautions slowed action in the 15-lap stock car feature event. When the green flag dropped, it was Luke Sathoff (Jackson) getting the early lead as Trent Schroeder got the second spot and Derek Green (Granada) grabbed the third position. On lap two, Schroeder moved around Sathoff for the lead. The leaders ran in this order for the first half of the race when the first caution was thrown on lap seven for Jim Larson (Rushmore), who spun in turn four. The restart saw Schroeder maintain his lead as Sathoff remained in second and Green third. On lap nine, Green was able to get by Sathoff for the second spot. Three laps later, the caution flag came out again for debris on the track. When the race resumed it was Schroeder holding the field off as he went on to claim the victory. Green was second, followed by Sathoff, Jeffrey Larson (Lakefield) and Brice Bodle (Wallingford, Iowa). Heat race wins went to Ken Tietz (Belle Plaine) and Green.
Sathoff cruises to B mod win
It was all Mark Sathoff in the 15-lap B modified feature race. At the start, Sathoff was able to get the lead from his outside row two starting spot, as Randy Klein (Currie) got the second spot and Greg Sidles (Emmetsburg, Iowa) the third position. On lap two, the caution flag came out when Eric Kinnetz (Milford, Iowa) spun in turn one. Another caution followed on the restart for a terrible restart. On the next attempt, Sathoff was able to keep the field behind him as Klein ran second and Sidles third. As the race went on, Sathoff continued to show the field around the track and at the end it was Sathoff picking up his first Jackson Speedway victory. He was followed by Klein, Sidles, Tracy Johnson (Lake Preston, S.D) and Jason Fisher (Lakefield). Heat race wins went to Dan Paplow (Dundee), Travis DoBoer (Fairmont) and Sidles.
Larson claims another win
Dustin Larson continued his domination in the hobby stock class as he picked up his seventh Jackson Speedway victory of the season. At the start, the caution flag was thrown when several cars got together going down the back straightway resulting in Justin Regnerus (Sioux Center, Iowa) going off the track as he was going into turn three and Kyle Schley (Alpha) getting turned around on the high side of turn three. Once everyone was pointed in the right direction and the race restarted, Larson grabbed the lead with Brandon Bosma (Round Lake) getting the second spot and John Briggs (Calumet, Iowa) the third position. The leaders ran in this order until lap eight, when the caution flag came out for Nate Manderfield (Mankato) and Jason Andrews (Okabena), who spun in turn four. Again on the restart, Larson maintained his lead and led the remaining four laps to take the win. Bosma did cross the finish line in second but was later disqualified when he did not pass tech. That moved the finishing order up one spot and gave second to Briggs. He was followed by Regnerus, Mitch Van Engen (Doon, Iowa) and Brad Halber (Hadley). Heat race wins went to Bosma and Larson.
Coopman wins again
The six-lap hornet feature event went to Nate Coopman, who got the lead from Amanda Kaltved (Estherville, Iowa) on lap four. Second went to Denny Johnson (Madelia), followed by Zach Ankrum (Sioux City, Iowa), Kaltved and Elmer Rolfes (Merrill, Iowa). Heat races went to Kaltved and Johnson.
