Legion's winning streak ends

The Jackson American Legion Post 130 baseball team won its sixth game in a row last Tuesday but then lost three straight games. The team is now 9-3 on the season.

The winning streak reached six games with a 17-1 win over Morgan last Tuesday but came to an end with two losses to Worthington and another loss to Wabasso.


Wabasso 16, Jackson 13

Wabasso scored in every inning and erased an 8-1 deficit to beat Jackson 16-13 in Wabasso Monday night.

Jackson scored twice in the first inning and six more times in the second inning to take an 8-1 lead but Wabasso used three runs in the second, six in the third and four in the fourth to come back and earn the win.

Josh Wacker and Levi Buresch both walked to start the game for Jackson, with Wacker scoring on a bases-loaded walk by Brock Thaemlitz and Buresch scored on a single by Joel Hartzler.

Cody Christensen and Wacker walked to start the six-run second inning for Jackson and after Trevon Bargfrede walked, the bases were loaded with one out. Tyler Rettig, Thaemlitz, Austin Rossow and Hartzler produced four straight run-scoring singles. Christensen, Wacker, Bargfrede, Rettig, Thaemlitz and Rossow all scored in the inning.

Wabasso trimmed the lead in the bottom of the second and took a 10-8 lead in the third inning.

The lead grew to 14-8 after four innings but Jackson scored twice in the fifth and threatened for more.

Bryce Christopher singled, Wacker reached on an error and Buresch walked to load the bases with one out. Rettig drove Christopher and Wacker in with a double off the fence but he was left on second and Buresch was stranded on third when the inning ended.

Wabasso built its lead to 15-10 with a run in the bottom of the fifth but Alex Hohenstein pulled Jackson within four with a solo home run to deep right field in the top of the sixth inning.

Wabasso scored a run in the bottom of the inning for a 16-11 lead and Jackson again threatened in the top of the seventh.

Wacker and Bargfrede both singled and scored, but the side was retired before Post 130 could get the potential tying run to the plate.

Rettig, Thaemlitz and Hartzler all had two hits for Jackson, with Rettig and Thaemlitz driving in three runs and Hartzler bringing in two.

Wacker scored four times. Hohenstein’s home run is the first for a Jackson player this season.


Worthington 12, Jackson 5

Worthington used 10 runs in the second inning to beat Jackson 12-5 in the second game of a doubleheader last Wednesday in Worthington.

Boog Steiner led off the first inning with a single for Jackson and scored on a single by Bargfrede to give Jackson a 1-0 lead.

The lead didn’t last long, as Worthington scored 10 runs in the second inning and another in the third inning.

Buresch, Bargfrede and Phil Pronk all scored in the third inning, with Bargfrede’s double scoring Buresch and Pronk’s single bringing in Bargfrede. Pronk later scored on a single by Christensen.

Worthington scored a run in the fourth and Jackson scored once in the sixth when Tyler Schwarting walked and scored.
Bargfrede had three hits and Hohenstein had two for Jackson.


Worthington 10, Jackson 0

Worthington used a seven-run second inning in the first game to beat Jackson 10-0 via the 10-run rule.

Worthington scored a run in the first and seven more in the second to jump out to an 8-0 lead and ended the game with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Steiner had two hits in the game, accounting for half of Jackson’s four hits. Hartzler and Nolan Luhmann had the other hits.


Jackson 17, Morgan 1

Jackson won its sixth straight game with a 17-1, 15-run rule win over Morgan last Tuesday in Jackson.

Jackson scored five runs in the first inning, another in the second, seven in the third and four in the fourth for the win.

Thaemlitz had three hits and Steiner, Wacker and Hohenstein each had two hits.

Thaemlitz drove in four runs and Evan Tufvesson drove in three. Steiner, Hohenstein and Andrew Paulson all had two RBI.

Steiner reached base all five times, walking three times and hitting a single and double. Schwarting, Thaemlitz and Pronk also had doubles.

Cody Christensen pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits and two walks in four innings. The only run he gave up came in the first inning but he wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam, as he did in the third inning.

Jackson was scheduled to play in Morgan Tuesday night and will wrap up its regular season tonight (Thursday) in Springfield.
