Police seek help to solve thefts
An unsolved string of thefts in Lakefield has city police turning to the public for help.
“We started noticing an increase in thefts in Lakefield around mid-June,” said Lakefield Police Chief Jared Praska. “That’s when the thefts took off on us.”
The types of items reported stolen have been just about anything people have left in their unlocked vehicles. Items reported missing so far have included digital cameras, iPods, loose change and articles of clothing.
To this point, all the thefts have been from vehicles left open, accessible and parked either in the street, a driveway or — more recently — a garage; that is, except for one that could possibly be related, but is still under investigation.
“We need to have people in Lakefield lock their vehicles,” Praska said. “And remember to not leave loose things out where they are tempting for a thief to easily take. But we are looking for people to call us and tell us what they are seeing and hearing too — especially at night when it is dark out. We have been working extra hours and have been changing our schedules in hopes of catching the thief or thieves. Some people have been cooperating, helping us, but we need everyone’s help now. We are short-staffed and that has added to the situation.”
Anyone who sees or suspects something should call the Lakefield Police Department right away. If there is no answer, Praska advises calling the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office so dispatchers can contact the Lakefield police officer in charge at that time.
The Lakefield Police Department phone number is 662-5353.
