Both Pete and Mazie Werner felt many other seniors were more deserving of the honor of being chosen the 2010 Outstanding Senior Citizens of Jackson County that they almost reluctantly accepted the announcement from Mel Radamacher of the selec-tion committee when he contacted them a couple weeks ago telling them they had been chosen.
Although both Leland (Pete) and Marion (Mazie) Werner lived the majority of their lives in Jackson, neither of them are original residents of the city. Pete was raised on a farm south of Alpha and received his education at Petersburg through the eighth grade. He attended Jackson High School for two years before joining the U.S. Army and earning his high school diploma during his time in the service.
Mazie calls Lakefield her original home as she was born and raised there and graduated from the Lakefield school.
Both will be recognized at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Olson Pavilion as the 2010 Outstanding Senior Citizens of Jackson County and will be presented with a plaque at that time.
