Huskies cheer to third
Competing against the best of the best, the Jackson County Central competition cheerleading team finished third at the state tournament Saturday.
East Ridge High School won the tournament with a score of 230 and DeLaSalle finished second (196). The Huskies weren’t far behind DeLaSalle, scoring 189. JCC beat New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva (167) and Pine City (151).
JCC head coach Barb Tvinnereim said she didn’t know much about East Ridge entering the tournament but found out the school is new in Woodbury, with most of its performers coming from a good middle school cheer program at St. Ambrose. The school also has more than 1,000 students, putting it well head of JCC in that category.
As for DeLaSalle, Tvinnereim knew they would be stiff competition.
“We have always known that DeLaSalle was good,” she said. “They have consistently been one of the best teams at state and even placed at the national level.”
Tvinnereim said she was pleased with the way her team cheered at state.
“I was happy we were competitive with schools close to our size,” she said. “I think the girls performed well, but there is always room for improvement. We had a fall and a couple parts that could be improved. We will take those things we didn’t do well and learn from them.”
The team will have another performance at the high school Feb. 12 and will compete at nationals Feb. 18-20.
Members of the competition cheer team are Angela Traetow, Heather Heser, Chelsey Herrig, Rachel Hanson, Shelly Buarapha, Jaci Runksmeier, Emily Marker, Lauren Vacek, Karlee Wegner, Marissa Grupe, Sarah Voehl, Alyssa Paulson, Kate Anderson, Emma Smith, Courtney Henning and Taylor Egeland.
Huskies earn awards
Marker and Traetow were honored as part of the Honor Team of Excellence, which recognizes seniors with high grade point averages and good community service.
The wrestling cheerleaders earned the RAH award for having the highest team GPA in the region. The team won the Southwest Region with a combined GPA of 3.62. The team consists of Vacek, Anderson, Cassie Ulbricht, Natalie Reardon and Shawna Grupe.
Young Huskies win
The elementary Huskies improved on their second-place finish a year ago to win the state title this year.
