Police force target of budget cuts
The possibility of reducing personnel at the Lakefield Police Department force topped a number of police-related items brought up during the regular meeting of the Lakefield City Council Monday evening.
Mayor Darrell Nissen began the discussion by noting the need to control city budgets due to cuts in Local Government Aid from the state.
“We’ve been working on cuts all year and I met with Jared (Praska, police chief) in August regarding the possibility of having one less full-time officer,“ Nissen said, “but only through attrition.”
Attrition, according to Nissen, would be “either through retirement or moving on to a job somewhere else.”
He also stressed, “Our intention is not to terminate an officer.”
