Nationals results - Night Three
The final night of the Jackson Nationals wrapped up last Saturday at the ASA-sanctioned Jackson Speedway with near perfect race weather. Picking up the 31st Annual Jackson Nationals Championships were Jake Peters (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Jackson Speedway Touring Series U.S. Army sprint cars; Casey Friedrichsen (Arthur, Iowa), Napa of Windom 305 sprint cars; Jeffrey Larson (Lakefield), Performance Center stock cars; Luke Wanninger (Jefferson, Iowa), Bohl’s Small Engine and Marine B modifieds; Stac Schroeder (Clear Lake, Iowa), Loosbrock Digging Service hobby stocks; and Roger Nielsen (Estherville, Iowa), Yellowbook hornets.
Peters takes early lead and wins JSTS 360 sprint feature
Two different drivers led in the 25-lap JSTS 360 sprint car feature. At the start of the race Wade Nygaard (Fargo, N.D.) got the early lead from his pole starting position. Jake Peters grabbed the second spot with Scott Winters (Butterfield) getting the third position. At the end of lap one the caution came out for Casey Heser (Jackson), who slowed through turns three and four. On the restart, Nygaard maintained the No. 1 spot with Winters now challenging Peters for second. On lap four, Peters challenged Nygaard for the lead but the caution flag flew once again when Jordan Martens (Harrisburg, S.D.) spun in turns one and two. On the restart, Peters made his move into the lead coming out of turn two, getting by Nygaard. When the field came around to complete lap six, Nygaard slipped back to third when he was passed by Lee Grosz (Harwood, N.D.). The next caution on lap six was for Nygaard when he lost his right rear tire in turns three and four. On the restart, Peters maintained his lead as Grosz raced in second and Justin Henderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was in third. The leaders raced in this order for the next several laps when Grosz spun in turn four on lap 20. The restart saw Peters continue his lead as Henderson ran second and Robby Wolfgang (Sioux Falls, S.D.) raced in third. When the field saw the white flag it was soon replaced with the yellow flag when Heser stopped in turn four. That set up a two-lap dash for the win, and when the green flag dropped it was Peters holding off the field and going on to pick up his third Jackson Nationals win. Henderson was second, followed by Wolfgang, Eric Lutz (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Brian Brown (Grain Valley, Mo.). The pole dash was won by Nygaard, with the B feature going to Gregg Bakker (Sioux Falls, S.D.). The heat races were won by Lutz, Austin Wheatley (Lake Stevens, Was.), Heser and Curt Lund (Redwood Falls).
Larson wins time-shortened stock car feature
After eight yellow flags and expired time limit, the scheduled 25-lap stock car feature ended under the yellow flag and the race was cut to 21 laps. At the drop of the green it was Ken Tietz (Belle Plaine) getting the early lead with Jeffrey Larson getting the second spot and Kevin Opheim (Mason City, Iowa) taking the third spot. On lap four, Opheim got around Larson for second. On lap five, the first caution came out when Dustin Larson (Rushmore) stopped for a flat right front tire. On the restart, Opheim was able to move around Tietz for the lead and on the next lap Jeffrey Larson moved back into second, getting around Tietz. Opheim led the next three laps with Larson in second. On lap 10, Jeffrey Larson moved into the No. 1 spot. Larson had to work at holding off the field through the next seven restarts, which saw the yellow flag fly every one-to-two laps. As the race began to enter its closing laps, Mike Jergens (Mallard, Iowa) moved into the second spot, getting around Opheim. When the race was finally called, Jeffrey Larson was the winner, followed by Jergens, Opheim, Jake Masters (Graettinger, Iowa) and Jeff Joldersma (McCallen, Iowa). The B feature was won by Heath Tenkley (Hartley, Iowa).
Friedrichsen takes 305 sprint win
Two different drivers led in the 20-lap 305 sprint car feature that saw one caution flag. At the start it was Brad Ryun (Higginsville, Mo.) getting the early lead with Casey Friedrichsen (Arthur, Iowa) taking the second spot and Austin Johnson (Minneapolis) getting the third spot. The leaders raced in this order for the first 12 laps of the race when Casey Friedrichsen made his move into the lead coming out of turn two. The next lap, Johnson also got by Ryun, who began to fall back in the field. On lap 15, the caution came out for Ryun, who spun when he got too far off the back straightaway. On the restart, Friedrichsen maintained his lead and went on to pick the win. He was followed by Johnson, Bruce Anderson (Trimont), Mike Blomstrom (Ft. Dodge, Iowa) and Jeff Metli (Mason City, Iowa).
Wanninger goes wire-to-wire in b modified feature
The 15-lap B modified feature saw Luke Wanninger lead the event start to finish. At the start of the race, several cars got together in turns three and four, resulting in the race’s first caution. On the complete restart, Wanninger got the early lead with Steve Bents (Rushmore) getting the second spot and Brett Meyer (Lytton, Iowa) getting the third spot. The next caution came at the end of lap one when Justin Schuder (Fairmont) stopped at the entrance to the work area. Once he was removed, the race resumed and Wanninger maintained the lead with Tad Reutzel (Burt, Iowa) now in the second spot and Dan Paplow (Dundee) in third. On lap four, Reutzel challenged Wanninger for the lead but Wanninger was able to keep him behind. Wanninger continued to lead the event with Reutzel in second and Meyer in third. On lap 11, the caution flag came out when Danny Mryvold (Heron Lake) spun in turns one and two and collected Wanninger in the mishap. Wanninger, however, got the lead back since he did not cause the yellow. On the restart, Wanninger maintained the lead and went on to pick up the win. He was followed by Reutzel, Meyer, Austin Lucas (Story City, Iowa) and Paplow. The B feature was won by Dan Ahlers (Slayton).
Schroeder leads entire hobby stock feature
The 15-lap hobby stock feature race saw Stac Schroeder lead the entire race. At the start of the race, the caution flag was thrown when Dan Strandberg (Worthington) spun in turn two. On the complete restart, Schroeder got the early lead as Dustin Larson (Rushmore) raced in second and Andy Beckman (Wall Lake, Iowa) was third. The leaders raced in this order for the first four laps when the next caution came out for Ernie Dailey (Worthington), who spun in turns three and four. On the restart, Schroeder maintained his lead with Larson in second and Beckman third. On lap 10, Beckman challenged Larson for second and was finally able to get around him on the next lap. On lap 13, the last caution flag flew when Ryan Moberg (Worthington) stopped in turns three and four. That set up a two-lap dash, which saw Schroeder go on and take the win. He was followed by Beckman, Larson, Justin Luinenberg (Reading) and Jason Andrews (Okabena). The B feature was won by Chad Krug (Mallard, Iowa).
Nielson holds off Coopman for hornet win
The 10-lap hornet feature saw two drivers go back-and-forth early in the event. At the start, Roger Nielsen got early lead, but on the next lap Nate Coopman (Mankato) got the lead coming out of turn two. On lap three, Nielsen got the lead back for good. Coopman stayed on his tail but could not make a pass. Nielsen took the win, followed by Coopman, Bentley Glaser (Armstrong, Iowa), Amanda Kaltved (Estherville, Iowa) and Dean Nething (Morgan).
