With nearly an inch of rain through the night Friday night and into Saturday morning, the ASA Sanctioned Jackson Speedway rolled in the big half mile for the night’s big Independence Day celebration. The night featured double features for the sprint cars and stock cars. Picking up both U.S. Army sprint car feature races was Lee Grosz (Harwood, N.D.). Casey Friedrichsen (Arthur, Iowa) and Ryan Voss (Okoboji, Iowa) won the NAPA of Windom 305 sprint car features. Ken Tietz (Belle Plaine) and Jerry Coopman (Mankato) won the Performance Center IMCA stock car features. Picking up the Bohl’s Small Engine and Marine Repair B modifieds feature was Dan Ahlers (Slayton); with the Loosbrock Digging Services hobby stock feature going to Dan Strandberg (Worthington); and the Yellowbook hornet feature going to Amanda Kaltved (Estherville, Iowa).

Grosz cruises to 360 win
In the first of two features for the 360 Sprints, it was Lee Grosz getting the early lead in the event. Grosz led from the drop of the green flag with Bill Boles (Harris, Iowa) in the second spot and Wade Nygaard (Fargo, N.D.) in the third position. As the race went on Grosz built up a comfortable lead on the field as Boles, Nygaard and Jake Peters (Sioux Falls, S.D.) all raced in a close pack for second through fourth. When the checkered flag flew, it was Grosz picking up the win, followed Boles, Nygaard, Peters and Shawn Van Wyhe (Rock Rapids, Iowa). However, following the race, Nygaard did not report to the scale to weigh and was disqualified. That moved the finishing order up one spot and gave third to Peters, followed by Van Wyhe and Joe Riedel (Ramona, S.D.).

Grosz makes it a sweep
Two red flags and several cautions slowed action the second feature. At the start, the red came out when Brad Mandery (Sioux Falls, S.D.) got upside down in turns three and four. Mandery was OK but down for the night. On the start, it was Grosz getting the early lead with Scott Winters (Butterfield) getting the second spot and Mike Young (Hartford, S.D.) getting the third spot. The yellow flag came out on lap two when Young went off the track in turns one and two. The restart saw Grosz hold the field off for one lap when the red flag came out again for Van Wyhe, who took a nasty ride off of turn one. Van Wyhe was talking with medical personnel at the track but was taken to the hospital for a checkup. On the restart, Grosz again kept the field behind him as Winters raced in second and Gordy Vogelaar raced in third. The leaders raced in this order until lap 17 when the caution came out for Winters, who had something break on the rear end of the car, forcing him to stop on the front straightaway. One more lap got in following the restart when Riedel got into the wall in turns three and four. The race’s final caution came on lap 19 when Peters slowed coming out of turn four. That set up a two-lap dash for the win. Grosz held off the field and went on to pick up his second feature race of the night. Nygaard was second, followed by Vogelaar, Boles and Chad Meyer (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Heat race wins went to Young, Meyer and Vogelaar.

Voss wins 305 sprint feature
The first 305 sprint car feature race went green-white-checkered and was led start to finish by Ryan Voss, who picked up the win. Mike Blomstrom (Ft. Dodge, Iowa) was second, followed by Jeff Edgington (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Devin Friedrichsen (Arthur, Iowa) and Frank Phipps (Everly, Iowa).

Friedrichsen wins thrilling sprint feature
The second 305 sprint feature race saw a great battle between race winner Casey Friedrichsen and Voss. Friedrichsen led the race’s first two-thirds of the event with Voss right on his tail for most of the trips around the speedway. While working on lap 12, Voss made his move around Friedrichsen in turns three and four. Voss only led that lap as he slowed coming out of turn four on the next lap and then went to the scale. However, there were still two laps in the event, which Friedrichsen led and went on to take the win. Russell Wiese was second, followed by Bruce Anderson (Trimont), Phipps and Jake Nicosen (Ringsted, Iowa). Heat races were won by Casey Friedrichsen and Voss.

Coopman takes stock car feature
Two different drivers led the first 15-lap stock car feature race. At the start, it was Derek Green (Granada) getting the early lead, with Jerry Coopman getting second spot and Jeff McCallum (Mankato) getting the third position. The leaders raced in this order for the first six laps when Coopman made his move into the lead coming out of turn four and down the front straightaway. Green raced in second with McCallum still in the third spot. When the checkered flag flew, it was Coopman picking up the win, followed by Green, McCallum, Ken Tietz and Jeffrey Larson (Lakefield).

Tietz holds on for stock car win
The second stock car feature race was led start to finish by Ken Tietz. At start of the race, the caution came out when Luke Sathoff (Jackson) spun on the back and Jake Masters (Graettinger, Iowa) spun in turn four. On the complete restart, Tietz grabbed the early lead with Jerry Coopman in the second spot and Troy Woelber (Hull, Iowa) in the third spot. On lap three, Trent Schroeder (Worthington) challenged Woelber for the third spot and two laps later got around him. As the race went on, the battle for the lead heated up among Tietz and Coopman. On lap eight, Coopman pulled alongside of Tietz, but Tietz was able to maintain the No. 1 spot. On lap nine, the caution came out for debris. On the restart, Tietz held off Coopman and went on to take the win. Coopman was second, followed by Larson, Tim Grathwohl (East Chain) and Schroeder. Heat races went to Jerry Coopman and Larson.

Ahlers makes late move to win B modified feature
The 12-lap B modified feature race went green-white-checkered. At the start, Kyle Steuber (Fairmont) got the early lead, with Dan Ahlers the second spot and Ben Ruby (Lakota, Iowa) the third spot. The next lap saw Josh Ruby (Lakota, Iowa) get by his brother Ben for the third spot. As the race went on, Ahlers challenged Steuber for the lead several times and was finally able to make the pass stick in turns three and four on lap 11. When the checkered flag flew, it was Ahlers picking up the win, followed by Josh Ruby, Steuber, Eric Kinnetz (Milford, Iowa) and Nick Dieter (Brewster). Heat races were won by Matthew Looft (Swea City, Iowa), Deiter and Josh Ruby.

Strandberg comes back to win hobby stock
Three different drivers led in the caution-filled, race-shortened, hobby stock feature. On the start, Brandon Bosma (Round Lake) got the early lead. He led the race’s first six laps surviving three restarts. On lap seven, Chad Krug moved into the lead when Bosma and Dan Strandberg were battling it out for the lead in turn two. The two of them got too high in turn two, allowing several cars to get by. As the caution flags continued to fly, Krug maintained the lead with Dustin Larson (Rushmore) in second. As the race began to wind down, Strandberg worked his way back up to the second spot and when the checkered flag flew, it was Strandberg getting the win. Krug had to settle for second. Dustin Larson did cross the finish line third but was disqualified. That moved the finishing order up one spot and gave third to Chad Carlson (Ormsby), followed by Chris Harris (Graettinger, Iowa). Heat races went to Krug, John Briggs (Calumet, Iowa) and Carlson.

Kaltved makes it two in a row
The six-lap Hornet feature was won by Amanda Kaltved, who picked up her second feature in a row. Jake Schroeder (Lakefield) was second, followed by Megan Lappegard (Estherville, Iowa), Tyler Manning (Graettinger, Iowa) and Austin Edwards (Sioux City, Iowa). The heat race was won by Schroeder.

Racing continues Saturday
This Saturday night, the action continues at the Jackson Speedway. There will be a special classic car cruise-in, plus the June 27 rained-out features for the hornets, hobby stocks and B modifieds will be run. Hot laps will be at 6 p.m., with racing to follow.
